BORUC....................7 It’s one of the frustrations of the game that Artur did not really have a lot to do and yet 2 goals were scored. He, of course, was blameless and did everything that was asked of him with class.
HINKEL...................7 The worries I have about him defensively could not be justified as he faced up to the task of an impressive Arsenal attack with courage, determination and heart. Did not blame him for being hoodwinked by Arsenal’s great footwork in the build up to the second goal.
CALDWELL.............6 Oh, dearie, dearie me! This is a player who, if he only concentrated on the basics of defending and not try to use these big games to impress how good a footballer he is, would not commit those dreadful lunge tackles or ‘clever’ short passes which have resulted in goals being scored against both club and country. He’s got a guid conceit of himself which often leads to danger.
LOOVENS...............8 MOM He was up against one of the best strike force in the country and yet he went about his job in a manner that his partner would do well imitate. He would be my first pick out of the 4 central defenders.
FOX.......................7 When you consider that it was his first experience of this level of football he did very well. His natural abilities to-gether with the experience of playing for Celtic in Europe will make him an integral part of the team.
BROWN.............. 6 Felt for him when I saw that he had been given the wide right wing role, it is just not his position. Having said that he will need to improve his passing if he wants to become part of Mowbray’s team.
N’GUEMO............7 He was not out of place in the company of Arsenal’s much vaunted midfield. Pity he made the inductive tackle that earned him the yellow card that rules him out of the next game. Will be another who will be a lynchpin in our fight to retain our Championship.
DONATI............. 6 It was the areas I have felt have been his weaknesses, i.e. committment, etc, which I thought were his strengths last night and the area of strengths which were i.e. decisive passing, which were his weaknesses.
MALONEY......... 6 He tried but was too easily muscled of the ball when in a threatening position.
McGEADY......... 7 Was played in the hole behind the striker and although he gave everything he had he just could not make the chances for himself or a teammate, mostly due to the pressing by the Arsenal team. Thought he would have had more success playing in the ‘Aberdeen’ position.
SAMARAS.........5 Must have been delighted to have been first pick but he too could not slip free from the Arsenal defence.
SUBS..................
McDONALD........5 He ran around but nothing came from any possession he had.
FORTUNE...........5 He will have to start producing something soon or the crowd will start picking him out and his head will go down.
McCOURT..........4 A great opportunity to show what he could do but he blew it. The odd flash of brilliance will not be enough to make him a success.
REF................... 5 Rec’d high praise from the t.v. pundit but I thought he got too many of the 50/50 decisions wrong. Also thought that he shirked the penalty decision.
GOALS.............. 1.& 2 A deflection and an own goal.................aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!
COMMENTS:
1. Celtic were by no means disgraced or completely outplayed but they did find it difficult to impose their own passing game due to the very professional pressing game by Arsenal.
2. The disappointment for me is the gradual demolition of the ‘Parkhead Fortress’ reputation that had been built up over the years. It is coming down brick by brick.
3. Going to London next week but not with the hope or excitement that I had envisaged.
4. Again no co-eff points............this is going to impact on us badly unless we produce a good run in the Europa Cup.`
